Help to stay safe at home

Small changes can make a home safer for an older parent: a grab bar beside the toilet, a rail on both sides of the stairs, a shower you can walk into.

Common changes

  • Grab bars and handrails in the bathroom and on stairs.
  • Stair lifts when stairs become hard to manage.
  • Walk-in tubs and barrier-free showers to avoid stepping over a tub wall.
  • Ramps for a walker or wheelchair at the entrance.
An occupational therapist can assess the home and recommend what will help most. Ask your parent's doctor or Ontario Health atHome about an assessment.
